About the Initiative

Overview

The Solid Waste Service of the Canadian Infrastructure Benchmarking Initiative (CIBI) is a tool that creates a constantly evolving performance monitoring system for solid waste collection, processing and disposal systems across Canada. The CIBI Solid Waste project objective aims to implement benchmarking that provides reliable information and, most importantly, builds upon the needs and requirements of the participant.

History

In 2011, in response to an increasing number of requests for solid waste management benchmarking, AECOM launched the National Solid Waste Benchmarking Initiative (NSWBI). Every iteration since then has been built on the foundation laid in its inaugural year. As we move each year, we are committed to improving and expanding on new and existing performance measures, verifying that we are continuing to collect quality data, and generating benchmarking comparisons that are relevant to our participants’ changing needs in the solid waste management sector.

In 2025, AECOM consolidated the NSWBI with the CIBI under the Solid Waste service of CIBI and now operate in a complete partnership. Through this consolidation a number of program improvements were made including updates to the web-based data collection portal and incorporation of Power BI software for improve data analysis and provide members the capability to utilize the data for internal purposes. The CIBI Solid Waste Team (previously NSWBI team) continues to provide members with streamlined data collection and reporting.
